In 2017 a team of STEM faculty at the University of Portland (UP) received an NSF grant to work on changing the culture of teaching. The project focuses on creating a culture of reflective teaching using evidence-based methods that have been shown to be effective for STEM students. Around the same time the NSF grant was funded, a group of UP faculty attended the Collegium Pause event and discussed how to inspire a broader conversation about teaching for mission. This proposal supports both efforts by creating a “Joy of Teaching” discussion group for UP STEM faculty to develop mission-centered teaching.
